RESOURCE CONDITION TARGET

MANAGEMENT ACTION TARGET

Burdekin Dry Tropics

By 2010, 100% of landscapes in good biodiversity condition are maintained.

By 2008, identify the relationship between land condition (ABCD Framework) (vegetation, soils, water) and biodiversity condition within the region, and identify appropriate integrated biodiversity and land management strategies.

By 2010, ensure 75% of land managers understand and are managing areas of high conservation value/rare and threatened species within their properties and across their sub-catchment for conservation purposes

By 2015, ensure 50% of land managers including local, state and federal governments are utilizing land management techniques that improve land and biodiversity condition

By 2010, develop and implement Traditional Owner country-based management plans.

By 2010, 20% of areas of woodland thickening, identified as having a net biodiversity impact are being managed

By 2010 Identify and implement appropriate fire regimes for regional ecosystems.

Southern Gulf Catchments

By 2015 the functions of the top 15 priority biodiverse areas are protected from further decline.

Within 2 years develop and implement a research program to gain a better understanding of biodiversity function in the region - to establish benchmarks to enable us to set the RCT.

Survey the abundance, composition and distribution of native fauna assemblages and identify the composition, distribution, environmental patterns, habitat association and threatening process by 2008.

By 07/08 establish reference sites representative of biodiversity functions in the gulf region

Prioritise important species and ecosystems and map and benchmark their condition by 2008.

Within 3 years identify threats to biodiversity function in the region, in particular threatened or rare species and ecosystems.

Identify land and water management strategies (fire, water, soils, vegetation management) that improve biodiversity condition by 2010.

Establish and implement targeted surveys and programs to monitor condition and viability of important species or ecosystems by 2012.

Within 2 years determine and promote the application of appropriate fire regimes through extension programs.

Within 5 years perform a region wide biodiversity awareness campaign.

Northern Gulf

Maintain and/or improve the long-term viability and stability of 100% of ecosystems and habitats in the Northern Gulf region by 2015.

Control or manage ecosystems to ensure that 100% of all habitats currently in good biodiversity condition is maintained in their current state and 50% of all habitats in a poor biodiversity condition is improved to good biodiversity condition by 2015, including the Einasleigh Uplands Bioregion (Biodiversity Hotspot)

Ensure no further animal species become threatened or vulnerable by poor land management practises by 2015.

By 2015 75% of land managers understand which habitats and ecosystems within their property and catchment are of high conservation value and require special management to enhance and protect their biodiversity values.

Ensure 5% of the Northern Gulf on private and leasehold land is voluntarily managed for nature conservation purposes by 2015.

Remnant vegetation remains at 100% of current extent with no further reduction in area or condition of “endangered” and “of concern” regional ecosystems by 2015 as listed under the Vegetation Management Act 1999.

Far North Queensland

Increase in the area, condition and integrity (i.e. net gain) of areas of ‘regional biodiversity significance’ by 2014

No net loss of the area of native vegetation across the region by 2008

The majority of areas mapped as regional management priorities managed for conservation purposes by 2014. Action: Support directed research in the Upper Herbert Catchment to fill data gaps; and; Increase community awareness of biodiversity values of vegetation outside of nature reserves, and how they are affected by land use practices.

Increased capacity of regional communities to manage for biodiversity conservation outcomes by 2009.

Community involved in monitoring extent and condition of native vegetation  by 2006; Action: encourage and assist community groups to collect relevant information at local scales

Desert Channels

No net increase in the area of land identified as having a long term declining ground cover trend by 2015.

By 2015 the community is effectively informed and engaged in the management of their natural resources.

Identify threats to biodiversity, rare/threatened species, and their specific habitat and ecosystem needs by 2007.

Systematic biodiversity survey of an identified priority area of the region undertaken by 2008.

Develop Best Management Practices (benchmarking and goals) for all major pasture types/ vegetation communities in the region by 2007 (includes fire management).

Develop education/awareness packages for the community on biodiversity values and landscapes by 2007 (recognise prior achievements).

Develop flexible community strategies to address biodiversity conservation (when ecosystems are most vulnerable i.e. drought) by 2006.

Develop benchmarks for biodiversity condition and management to be incorporated into the GLM (land condition assessment) and tourism management package by 2006.

Develop Best Management Practices (benchmarking and goals) for all major pasture types/ vegetation communities in the region by 2007 (includes fire management).
