Pest management plans developed under the Land Protection ( Pest
and Stock Route Management) Act 2002 have the statutory capacity
and responsibility to address pest management issues on a Local
Authority Area basis. (Links to LG strategies). Given the
importance of strategic and catchment based approaches to weed and
pest management, regional coordination is an important planning
requirement.
A strategic and coordinated response is required, which will be
accomplished under the auspices of a Regional Pest Management
Strategy project. The development of the strategy will:
- engage key regional stakeholders and stakeholder groups in
actions to address key pest management issues in the region;
- identify priorities for weed management within the region based
on the threat posed, allowing more effective allocation of limited
resources;
- develop a strategic and integrated regional response to pest
management issues in the region – the Burdekin Dry
Tropics Regional Pest Management Strategy ;
The objectives of the strategy itself are to:
- provide a framework for decision making and coordination of
on-ground works within the region, and in particular enable
resources to be shared to reduce costs and enable the appropriate
resources to be utilised for new pest introduction eradication and
priority pest control or eradication;
- raise awareness of weed issues within the region;
- tackle regional priorities that are consistent with national,
state and local priorities; and
- provide opportunities for partnerships and relationships that
encourage coordinated weed management.
