The National Landcare Program (NLP) was established to promote
improved land management practices among landholders.
NQ Dry Tropics has been responsible for managing landcare
projects in the Burdekin Dry Tropics region. Some highlights from
this program are shown below.
SPIRAL
SPIRAL was a community engagement project that focused on
working with a range of different landholders across the Upper
Burdekin Rangelands to increase their awareness and understanding
of natural resource management.
Dalrymple Landcare Committee was responsible for managing the
project. This is an umbrella group comprising
of seventeen sub-catchment groups, with a membership of 320
grazing and rural properties.
Seventy landholders participated in training activities on GPS
& computerised mapping and grazing land management. Sixty six
on-groung works projects were also undertaken. The focus of the
on-ground works was to improve and advance land management
practices and includes various proponents of: sub divisional &
riparian fencing, off stream watering points, weed management,
erosion control, improvement to land condition through ripping and
seeding and to encourage landcare group activity through meetings,
demonstration days and site visits, which are often held on
properties where works have been completed.
Some of the successful stories have been made available for
viewing on the Placeworks website (www.placestories.com).
Employment of a Regional Landcare
Coordinator
A Regional Landcare Coordinator was employed between 2006 and
2008 to provide information on initiatives in the Burdekin Dry
Tropics region.
Revitalising Landcare of the Burdekin Dry Coastal
Plain
This project provided funding for landholders in the Burdekin
Dry Coastal plain to improve land management practices. It finished
in 2008 and resulted in 12 landholders participating in the
program. Activities included: weed management, riparian fencing,
and the establishment of off-stream watering points.
